A Season of High Risk — and High Responsibility
From 1 December to 15 January, South Africa observes National Road Safety Month, a critical period aimed at reducing road crashes, injuries, and fatalities during the festive season. This is the busiest travel period of the year — and the deadliest.
Last season alone, more than 1,500 lives were lost on South African roads. Most of those deaths were preventable, caused by avoidable factors such as speeding, drunk driving, fatigue, unroadworthy vehicles, and pedestrian negligence.
As millions of people journey home, take holidays, or travel for work, the need for collective responsibility has never been greater.
This year, TAPSOSA is proud to stand in solidarity with the Department of Transport, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), Arrive Alive, SAPS, emergency services, and community safety structures to amplify the message:
“Road safety is everyone’s business.”
Why Road Safety Month Matters
During December and January, road traffic volumes can double — and so do the risks.
The festive season places extraordinary pressure on:
- Long-distance public transport operators.
- Private motorists.
- Trucking and logistics routes.
- Holiday destinations and event hubs
- Urban and township commuter corridors.
The combination of fatigue, alcohol consumption, high speeds, congested routes, and poor vehicle maintenance creates a high-risk environment, especially at night and on major highways.
Strengthening road safety is not just a law-enforcement issue — it is a national responsibility requiring collaboration across sectors, including the private security industry.
TAPSOSA’s Role in Supporting National Road Safety Efforts
As an industry with thousands of security officers deployed across the country — on the roads, at malls, events, residential estates, business districts, and transport nodes — private security is uniquely positioned to reinforce road safety.
TAPSOSA is committed to advancing the national campaign by:
1. Promoting Awareness Across Private Security Companies
Private security personnel often interact with the public daily.
TAPSOSA will support companies with:
- Safety messaging toolkits
- Posters & digital infographics
- Holiday travel safety checklists
- Daily social media alerts throughout the season
This ensures that road safety awareness reaches employees, communities, and clients.
2. Ensuring Security Officers Model Responsible Road Conduct
Security officers frequently operate patrol vehicles, respond to emergencies, escort clients, or monitor traffic-heavy environments.
We emphasise:
- Safe driving at all times.
- No speeding during patrol response.
- Zero tolerance for alcohol or substance use.
- Adhering to road rules, even under pressure.
- Proper rest and shift management to avoid fatigue.
Security officers must demonstrate the road behaviour we want the public to follow.
3. Supporting Traffic Coordination at Events & High-Activity Areas
The holiday season brings concerts, festivals, shopping peaks, religious gatherings, and major tourism activity.
Private security often assists with:
- Traffic flow management.
- Pedestrian safety.
- Crowd control.
- Emergency response coordination with SAPS & EMS.
- Protecting pick-up/drop-off zones.
- Monitoring accident-prone areas.
Our presence strengthens safe mobility and reduces congestion-related risks.
4. Sharing Real-Time Alerts and Educational Content
Throughout the season, TAPSOSA will share:
- Road safety tips
- Weather and traffic warnings.
- Emergency numbers.
- Safe travelling guides.
- Responsible drinking messages.
- National enforcement updates from RTMC and DOT.
Members can republish these materials internally and on their platforms.
Key Safety Messages for the Festive Season
As we are launching the Road Safety Awareness Campaign, TAPSOSA encourages every driver, passenger, and pedestrian to adopt the following safety commitments:
✔ Slow Down – Speed Kills
Even minor reductions in speed can save lives.
✔ Never Drink and Drive
Drunk driving remains one of the top contributors to festive-season fatalities.
✔ Wear Your Seatbelt
Always. Front and back. No exceptions.
✔ Rest Regularly on Long Trips
Fatigue contributes to thousands of crashes.
✔ Keep Your Vehicle Roadworthy
Check tyres, lights, brakes, and fluid levels before travelling.
✔ Be Visible if You Are a Pedestrian
Most pedestrian deaths occur at night.
✔ Share the Road Responsibly
Be patient, alert, and considerate.
Call to Action: Let’s Save Lives This Season
TAPSOSA urges all members, clients, and communities to be part of the solution.
Let’s commit to:
- Safer driving
- Sober roads
- Slower speeds
- Protecting passengers & pedestrians
Together, we can reduce road deaths, prevent unnecessary tragedies, and ensure that families arrive safely.
